About WESTERN RED Cedar
Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) is a large coniferous tree native to the western coastal regions of North America. Belonging to the cypress family (Cupressaceae), it is characterized by its tall stature, with straight trunks that can reach heights of 200 feet. Its wood of is highly valued for its natural durability, dimensional stability, and decay resistance due to its natural oils and tannins. It is commonly used in exterior cladding, decking, shingles, and siding, as well as in outdoor furniture and other construction projects. Western red cedar has a distinctive reddish-brown heartwood, while the sapwood is paler in color, creating a visually appealing contrast.
Durability
Western red cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insects due to its abundance of natural oils and tannins. This resistance to decay makes it a long-lasting option for exterior cladding.
Dimensional stability
Western red cedar has low density and a low shrinkage factor, which contributes to its excellent stability in varying weather conditions. This stability helps reduce warping, twisting, and splitting over time.
Aesthetic appeal
Western red cedar is known for its rich color variations, ranging from light amber to deep reddish-brown, which can enhance the visual appeal of a building. Its natural beauty often deepens with age, adding character to the structure.
Workability
Western red cedar is lightweight and has a straight grain, making it easy to cut, shape, and install. It also accepts a variety of finishes, stains, and paints well, allowing for customization to suit different design preferences.
Insulating properties
Similar to eastern white cedar, western red cedar provides natural insulation, helping to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and potentially reducing energy costs.
